Key Thane Civic Committees Remain Vacant Six Months After New Corporation House Formed

THANE — Key civic committees within the Thane Municipal Corporation have remained entirely vacant for nearly six months after the new municipal house was first constituted in January. The prolonged delay in forming these essential statutory panels has stalled crucial administrative decisions and fueled political speculation in the city.

As of June 2026, the Thane civic administration has not formed a single special committee. The vacancies include the highly influential standing committee and the transport committee, both of which are critical to the daily governance and financial decision-making of the city.

Among the unfilled positions are 16 seats on the standing committee, which remains completely unconstituted. In addition, the civic body has failed to appoint chairpersons for nine different ward committees across Thane.

The vacancy also extends to several other specialized panels. Committees dedicated to health, education, sports and culture, slum improvement, and women and child welfare remain without appointed members or leadership.

This administrative standstill has raised concerns over potential delays and disruptions in local governance. Without these functioning committees, key decisions, policy implementations, and administrative functions of the Thane Municipal Corporation face significant bottlenecks.

The delay has also led to rising political friction. Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have publicly alleged that they are being excluded from key decision-making positions within the Thane civic body. This ongoing dispute has fueled widespread speculation regarding tensions within the political alliance responsible for governing the municipal corporation.
