Maharashtra Hikes PUC Certificate Charges for All Vehicle Categories

Vehicle owners across Maharashtra will now have to pay increased fees for Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates after the state Transport Department implemented revised testing charges on August 21, 2026.
Under the revised structure, the cost for a two-wheeler PUC certificate has risen from Rs 50 to Rs 60. Petrol three-wheeler testing fees have increased from Rs 100 to Rs 120. Charges for petrol, CNG, and LPG vehicles have gone up from Rs 125 to Rs 140, while testing fees for diesel vehicles have been increased from Rs 150 to Rs 180.
The revision comes following sustained demands from the Maharashtra State PUC Centre Owners Association for an increase in testing fees. In response, the Transport Department had constituted a three-member committee to review PUC charges, regulations, and testing procedures implemented in other states.
The association had also approached the Bombay High Court regarding the matter. During the proceedings, the high court directed the state government to take a formal decision on the issue within four months. Following the court's directive and the recommendations submitted by the committee, the Transport Department approved and notified the updated tariff.
Officials stated that the new rates were determined after evaluating factors such as vehicle and fuel categories, the operational cost of testing equipment, and remuneration for testing staff.
The Transport Commissioner's office has instructed all authorised PUC centres across the state to prominently display the revised rate chart at their premises and strictly prohibited them from charging fees above the prescribed limits.
Motorists have voiced concern over the revised rates, pointing out that the price hike adds to existing expenses including fuel prices, toll fees, vehicle insurance, and routine maintenance. Vehicle owners have also called on the government to address widespread pothole damage and work towards improving general road conditions across the state.
