Maharashtra RTO Begins Checks on Auto, Cab Drivers' Marathi Language Skills

Transport authorities across Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra launched an enforcement drive on Tuesday to check whether commercial passenger vehicle drivers possess a basic working knowledge of the Marathi language.

Regional Transport Office (RTO) flying squads are conducting random inspections on the ground to enforce the mandatory rule. The drive brings drivers attached to app-based aggregators such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido under direct scrutiny alongside traditional autorickshaw and taxi drivers.

According to state transport officials, around 1.65 lakh auto and taxi drivers have completed Marathi language training conducted under a government-backed learning programme. However, transport officials and union leaders acknowledged that a significant number of drivers operating for app-based platforms are yet to undergo the training.

The enforcement measures have caused concern among aggregator drivers, many of whom migrated from states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand and rely on app-based ride-hailing services for their livelihood.

Union leader Shashank Rao stated that drivers are willing to learn the language and interact with passengers, but highlighted a shortage of facilities. Rao noted that a substantial number of drivers have not been able to complete the training because there are not enough centres available.
