Maharashtra TET 2026 postponed after Bhiwandi Police uncover alleged paper leak

The Maharashtra government on Saturday, June 27, 2026, postponed the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) 2026 following an investigation by the Bhiwandi Police in Thane district that uncovered an alleged exam paper leak. The decision came just one day before the examination was scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
The postponement directly affects approximately six lakh candidates who were scheduled to appear for the test across 1,728 centres in the state. In a press release, the government stated that the decision was taken to make the examination transparent.
The alleged leak was discovered after the Bhiwandi Police conducted a search and found individuals in possession of questions that were similar to those on the TET paper. Officials from the Maharashtra State Examination Council (MSEC) were called to the spot to verify the seized papers. During the investigation, officials confirmed that some of the questions found with the suspects matched the official exam questions.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against three persons at the Bhiwandi police station. MSEC Deputy Commissioner Priya Shinde confirmed that the police are conducting further investigations and promised strict action against those found responsible.
Following the development, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde called for severe action against the accused. He stated that those involved should be booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
The postponement has also sparked political criticism from the Opposition. Maharashtra Congress president Harshawardhan Sapkal hit out at the government, demanding a thorough probe. He questioned the government's capacity to hold transparent examinations and warned of protests if strict action is not taken.
According to MSEC Deputy Commissioner Priya Shinde, organising an examination of this scale typically takes around three weeks. She clarified that candidates who have already registered will not need to register again or pay any re-registration fees, as the candidates are not at fault. The MSEC will publish the new examination date and related details on its official website.
