Makarand Narwekar Urges BMC to Speed Up Nariman Point Fire Station Redevelopment

BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar has appealed to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to urgently expedite the redevelopment of the dilapidated fire station in Nariman Point, Mumbai.

In a formal letter sent to Rajesh Aggarwal, who serves as the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, BMC commissioner Ashwini Bhide, and Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, the corporator highlighted the critical need to upgrade the emergency infrastructure. He pointed out that the current ground-plus-one (G+1) structure of the fire station is in a highly dilapidated condition and requires immediate intervention.

According to Narwekar, the redevelopment of the fire station on its 3,500-square-metre plot was previously discussed during an official meeting held on January 7. During that session, the BMC was asked to create a comprehensive plan for the redevelopment of the site. However, Narwekar noted that there has been no progress or development on the issue since that meeting took place.

The corporator emphasized the strategic importance of the Nariman Point fire station. He noted that the station is critical given the rising population in the surrounding area as well as the presence of major government establishments nearby, including the Vidhan Bhavan and the Mantralaya.

Currently, the entire 3,500-square-metre plot is in the possession of the BMC, and the land is reserved specifically for Fire Brigade purposes. Furthermore, the premises fall under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) category as per the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) 2019.

Narwekar urged the state and municipal authorities to take prompt action. He stated that upgrading the facilities is an absolute necessity considering the strategic importance of the fire station and the urgent need to ensure robust emergency services for the area.
