Manoj Jarange Begins Indefinite Hunger Strike in Jalna Over Maratha Quota

Quota activist Manoj Jarange launched an indefinite hunger strike on Saturday at Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district, accusing Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of harbouring a grudge against the Maratha community and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde of covertly supporting him.

Speaking to reporters before commencing the fast, Jarange stated that this protest would be his final agitation. He warned that if the state government fails to address pending quota issues, protesters will march to the Chief Minister's official residence, Varsha Bungalow, in Mumbai.

Jarange demanded that eligible Marathas be recognised as Kunbis, an agrarian community entitled to reservation benefits in education and government employment under the Other Backward Class category. He also called for the complete elimination of the caste verification committee in Maharashtra, arguing that authorities are arbitrarily rejecting valid documentation.

He questioned why a separate caste verification process exists in the state when Tehsildars and Sub-Divisional Magistrates hold the authority in other states, urging the government to establish uniform laws. Jarange claimed that while historical records have been found, officials are denying certificates to community members and stalling the progress of Maratha youth.

While expressing willingness to hold discussions if a state government delegation arrives, Jarange maintained that he will not end his fast until all issues are fully resolved. Since August-September 2023, the activist has launched nine separate hunger strikes to advocate for Maratha reservation under the OBC category.
