MHADA Identifies 82 Dangerous Buildings in Mumbai Pre-Monsoon Survey

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) identified 82 highly dangerous buildings in Mumbai's island city during its annual pre-monsoon survey. The safety assessment, conducted by the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board, focused on identifying old and dilapidated cessed structures that pose a severe risk to residents before the onset of the monsoon season.
Among the 82 flagged structures, 43 buildings were carried over from the previous year's list of dangerous properties. The identified buildings are distributed across various locations, including Bomanji Lane, Bora Bazaar, Samuel Street, Sheikh Memon Road, Kalbadevi, JSS Road, VP Road, and Mama Parmanand Marg. Additional unsafe structures were identified in Girgaum, Khetwadi, Mazgaon, Kalachowkie, Nagpada-Byculla, and Dadar-Shivaji Park.
A total of 2,736 people currently occupy these hazardous buildings. This population consists of 2,256 residential occupants and 480 non-residential occupants who are at risk due to the compromised structural integrity of the buildings.
In response to the survey findings, MHADA issued official notices to 176 residents, directing them to vacate the unsafe premises. Following the issuance of these notices, 29 residents relocated to temporary transit camps provided by the authority, while another 36 occupants secured their own alternative accommodation.
For the remaining residents who have not yet left, eviction notices have been formally issued. MHADA officials confirmed that the process of vacating these final premises is currently underway to ensure public safety.
The Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board has issued a public appeal urging all remaining inhabitants of these 82 buildings to vacate immediately. To manage emergencies and coordinate assistance, the board established a 24-hour control room in Tardeo. Residents can reach the emergency control room at 022-2353 6945 or 93216-37699 to report distress or seek guidance.
