MRVC Deploys RO-RO Trolley for Virar-Dahanu Project at Wadhiv Island
The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation deployed a Roll-On Roll-Off trolley near Wadhiv Island on August 11, 2026, to transport concrete, earth, and other construction material across marshy terrain for the Virar-Dahanu railway quadrupling project. The arrangement uses existing railway infrastructure as a construction highway to reach locations where standard road access is unavailable.
The deployment is actively being used on the north side of Bridge 92, around Wadhiv Island, and on the south-side approach to Bridge 93. Measuring 8 metres in length and 3 metres in width, the trolley features a theoretical capacity of 70 metric tonnes and a working capacity of around 50 tonnes.
Material is loaded directly onto the trolley and moved across the existing Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd bridge. Officials stated that using the existing track network allows construction teams to continue work without waiting for temporary access routes, avoiding extensive earthwork in the marshy terrain and minimizing environmental disturbance to the surrounding area.
This marks the first time an RO-RO trolley system has been used in a Western Railway project. It serves as a key logistical solution for moving essential materials through an otherwise inaccessible stretch while eliminating safety and transport challenges associated with constructing temporary roads.
The logistical milestone comes as the overall Rs 3,578-crore Virar-Dahanu Road quadrupling project reached 47 per cent completion. Executed by MRVC under Phase 3 of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project, the project involves major civil works along the coastal rail corridor.
To date, over 88 per cent of earthwork for the expansion has been finished, alongside the construction of more than 50 bridges and road underbridges. Station redevelopment work and the construction of utility buildings are also progressing across multiple sites, including Virar, Vaitarna, Saphale, Kelve Road, Palghar, Umroli, Boisar, Vangaon, and Dahanu Road.
