Mumbai Hits All-Time High Peak Power Demand of 4,608 MW

Mumbai recorded an all-time high peak power demand of 4,608 MW on Monday, June 8, 2026, stretching the city's electricity network as temperatures and humidity climbed.

The unprecedented level of electricity consumption marked a major milestone for the city's power grid. The surge was primarily driven by the heavier use of fans and air-conditioners across homes and offices, while data centres also continued to add a significant load to the system.

To bridge the gap between the soaring demand and local generation, distribution utilities Tata Power and Adani Electricity procured over 3,700 MW from external sources. This external supply included green energy wheeled in from outside Mumbai.

Local power generation contributed only 868 MW in total to meet the peak demand. Out of this local contribution, Tata Power generated 574 MW, while Adani Electricity produced 294 MW.
