Mumbai Peak Power Demand Hits All-Time High of 4,608 MW

Mumbai recorded its highest-ever peak power demand on Monday, with electricity consumption reaching an unprecedented 4,608 MW. The surge in energy usage put immense pressure on the city's power network as both temperatures and humidity levels climbed.
The record-breaking demand was driven by a significant increase in the use of electrical appliances. Residents and office workers across Mumbai turned to heavier use of fans and air-conditioners to cope with the hot and humid weather conditions. Additionally, data centres operating in the city continued to add a substantial load to the power grid, further driving up the overall consumption.
To meet the massive requirement, Mumbai's power utility companies had to look beyond local generation. Local power plants contributed only a fraction of the total demand, generating a combined total of just 868 MW. Of this local generation, Tata Power produced 574 MW, while Adani Electricity generated 294 MW.
To bridge the massive gap between the peak demand and local supply, utilities Tata Power and Adani Electricity procured over 3,700 MW from external sources. A portion of this imported electricity included green energy wheeled in from outside Mumbai to ensure the city's electricity network remained functional and stable.
The event marks an all-time high in electricity consumption for the city, reflecting the severe pressure on the local power grid during peak periods.
