Mumbai Taxi and Auto-Rickshaw Fares to Increase From September 1

Commuters in Mumbai will face higher travel costs from September 1 after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) approved a fare revision for compressed natural gas (CNG)-run black-and-yellow taxis and auto-rickshaws across the metropolitan region.

Under the revised structure, the minimum fare for black-and-yellow taxis will rise by ₹2, increasing from ₹31 to ₹33 for the first 1.5 kilometres. For auto-rickshaws, the minimum fare will increase by ₹1, moving from ₹26 to ₹27 for the first 1.5 kilometres.

Beyond the base distance, the per-kilometre rate for taxis has been increased from ₹20.66 to ₹21.90. The per-kilometre fare for auto-rickshaws has gone up from ₹17.14 to ₹18.22, according to the meeting minutes finalised on Wednesday.

The fare revision was approved at a meeting chaired by the Maharashtra transport secretary, following the pricing formula established by the four-member Khatua panel for revising taxi and auto-rickshaw fares in the state.

A Regional Transport Office (RTO) official stated that drivers will only be permitted to collect the revised fares after their vehicles' electronic meters have been recalibrated. The MMRTA has granted drivers a window from September 1 until the end of November to complete the recalibration process. Vehicle operators who fail to update their meters within this timeframe will face penalties.

This marks the first fare revision in Mumbai in 18 months. The previous adjustment came into effect on February 1, 2025, when fares for both taxis and auto-rickshaws were raised by ₹3.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is home to more than 4.5 lakh auto-rickshaws and over 50,000 black-and-yellow taxis, the majority of which operate on CNG.
