Neil Nitin Mukesh Remembers Grandfather Mukesh Ahead of 50th Death Anniversary

Ahead of the 50th death anniversary of legendary playback singer Mukesh on August 27, actor Neil Nitin Mukesh reflected on his grandfather's enduring legacy and how his family kept the singer's memory alive. Mukesh passed away during a concert tour in Detroit, having departed directly after recording the song "Chanchal sheetal nirmal komal" for composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal in Raj Kapoor's film Satyam Shivam Sundaram.

Although Neil was born six years after his grandfather's demise, he credited his grandmother, the late Saral Mukesh, with making him feel deeply connected to him. Neil and his sister spent weekends at her residence watching Raj Kapoor films on videocassettes—often choosing the film Mera Naam Joker—and viewing Mukesh's collection of accolades, including his National Film Award.

Neil shared that he initially struggled as a child to understand playback singing, as he saw actors singing the songs on screen while his grandmother explained that his grandfather was the actual vocalist. The concept became clear to him during a film shoot in Bengaluru, when director Yash Chopra cast him to portray the younger version of Rishi Kapoor in the movie Vijay. Chopra explained the mechanics of lip-synching for the song "Akkad bakkad bambe bo". Upon returning to Mumbai, Neil recounted explaining to his grandmother that he finally understood what his grandfather and father did professionally.

Following Mukesh's sudden death, his son Nitin Mukesh took up music professionally to support the family, including his mother and younger siblings. Nitin had trained in music but originally aspired to direct films, having worked as an assistant to filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee for several years. Mukesh had also intended to produce a film for his son before his passing.

Neil also highlighted the generational bond shared with iconic singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. Mangeshkar had suggested naming him Neil after astronaut Neil Armstrong because of his fair complexion as an infant. Neil also recalled words of encouragement from Bhosle during a challenging phase in his career, when she reminded him of how his father maintained grace and resilience through difficult professional periods.
