One Dead in Chandivali as Heavy Rains and Waterlogging Prompt Orange Alert in Thane

Heavy overnight monsoon rains caused widespread waterlogging, uprooted trees, and severe traffic disruptions across Thane, Mumbai, Palghar, and Raigad, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange weather alert on Thursday morning. The heavy downpour also resulted in a tragedy when a man died after being swept into an open manhole in the Chandivali area.
The fatal accident in Chandivali occurred as continuous overnight showers flooded the streets. The severe waterlogging apparently concealed the uncovered manhole, leading to the tragic incident where the man was swept away.
The entire region witnessed intense precipitation during the overnight spell, reflecting widespread showers across different parts of the city. Santacruz recorded the highest rainfall, measuring 165.9 mm between 8:30 AM on July 1 and 5:30 AM on July 2. Other locations also received heavy rainfall during this period, including Juhu with 164.5 mm, Vikhroli with 163 mm, Ram Mandir with 157 mm, Bandra with 141.5 mm, and Vidyavihar with 132 mm.
In response to the intense weather conditions, the IMD issued an orange alert at 7 AM on Thursday. The warning, which was valid for a three-hour period, stated that moderate to intense spells of rain were very likely to occur at isolated places across Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, and Palghar.
The heavy overnight rainfall severely affected normal movement and disrupted traffic across the region. Flooded roads and uprooted trees blocked key transit routes, causing significant delays for commuters. Local residents faced major challenges navigating the waterlogged streets as wet weather conditions continued to impact the metropolitan area.
