Panvel Civic Body Approves Rs 13.20-Crore Multi-Level Parking Near Lifeline Hospital

The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a proposal to construct a multi-level mechanised parking facility on Plot No. 184/1 'A' Part near Lifeline Hospital in Old Panvel. The decision, aimed at curbing severe traffic congestion caused by roadside parking and narrow roads in the old city area, was passed during a general body meeting held on Thursday.

The planned facility is designed to accommodate a total of 168 vehicles, comprising 72 four-wheelers and 96 two-wheelers. The civic body has estimated the project cost at more than Rs 13.20 crore, which includes goods and services tax alongside allied expenses.

Old Panvel is characterized by a traditional peth layout with narrow lanes that regularly face heavy traffic. The presence of government offices, commercial establishments, busy markets, hospitals, and the Panvel bus stand draws a substantial volume of commuters and vehicles each day. Due to the shortage of dedicated parking spaces, motorists frequently leave their vehicles on roadsides, narrowing the carriageway and triggering congestion. The traffic pressure intensifies during festival seasons and peak shopping periods when market footfall rises sharply.

To maximise vehicle capacity on the limited plot, the civic body plans to deploy vertical rotary parking systems and tower parking. Under the technical layout, 96 two-wheelers will be accommodated through a vertical rotary parking setup. For four-wheelers, 18 slots will be provided through the rotary system and another 54 slots through tower parking, bringing total car capacity to 72.

The project site is situated opposite the Panvel bus stand and adjacent to Lifeline Hospital. The plot is already reserved for parking purposes and currently handles two-wheeler parking. Given its proximity to the city's primary market area, the civic administration decided to expand its capacity vertically.

Details regarding the facility's daily operation, maintenance framework, parking tariffs, and administrative management will be finalised as the project moves forward. Civic officials expect the mechanised facility to shift parked vehicles off the streets, freeing up roadway space and easing movement for both motorists and pedestrians in the busy commercial pocket.
