Pedestrian Dies After Balcony Collapses at Surya Prakash Building in Walkeshwar

A 51-year-old pedestrian died late Tuesday night after a portion of a third-floor balcony collapsed from a building on Babulnath Road in the Gaondevi area of Walkeshwar, Mumbai.

The victim, identified as Santosh Ramchandra Bharaskar, was walking past the Surya Prakash Building when the structure gave way and crashed onto the road.

The incident occurred at a ground-plus-three-storey building, which is a MHADA cessed property. According to onlookers who witnessed the accident, a part of the balcony on the third floor of the structure suddenly detached and plummeted onto the street below. The incident was officially reported to the Mumbai Fire Brigade at 11:22 PM.

Bharaskar, who was employed at a petrol pump located near the building, was walking on the road when the debris fell. He sustained severe injuries from the impact of the falling concrete and masonry.

Following the collapse, emergency services were mobilized to the Gaondevi area. Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the Mumbai Police, the BEST undertaking, the 108 ambulance service, and local municipal ward staff rushed to the spot.

Bharaskar was quickly evacuated from the debris and rushed to Sir J. J. Hospital. However, medical professionals at the hospital declared him brought dead upon arrival.

Currently, the exact cause of the structural failure at the Surya Prakash Building remains unknown. Both the police and civic authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine why the third-floor balcony collapsed.
