Shastrinagar Hospital Doctors Resign After Alleged Assault By Shiv Sena Corporator

A 26-year-old Resident Medical Officer (RMO) and several other medical staff members submitted their resignations on Tuesday following an alleged physical assault by a Shiv Sena corporator and his associates at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation's (KDMC) Shastrinagar Hospital. The resignations come after the hospital staff was allegedly targeted late on a Monday night, prompting workers to launch a strike that disrupted healthcare services.
The 26-year-old doctor, who holds a BAMS degree and has worked at the Shastrinagar Hospital for nearly five months, stated that he has been living in fear since the incident. He has been constantly changing his location due to threatening calls and messages from unknown individuals and has not returned to work.
The young doctor, a native of Washim district, explained that he has not informed his mother about the assault. His mother is a single parent and a school teacher. He stated that he is her only child and did not have the courage to tell her, adding that he is currently just trying to survive.
Another medical professional, Dr. Shrushti Baviskar, was also allegedly assaulted during the incident. Having joined the civic hospital just a month prior, she expressed that the attack has left her deeply traumatised and has shaken her confidence in her first job as a doctor. Her father, Mahendra Baviskar, spoke to the media and stated that the assault on the doctors and hospital staff reflected a complete breakdown of law and order.
The assault, which allegedly involved Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre and his associates, left several hospital employees in tears and led to an immediate strike by the medical staff.
Following the incident, an FIR was registered at the Vishnunagar Police Station. Police arrested corporator Ramesh Mhatre and three other accused—identified as Akshay Karande, Ramesh Pawar, and Shailesh Nikam—on Wednesday.
