Tardeo Agent Sparks Outrage Over 'Vegetarian Only' Flat Listing

A promotional video by a real estate agent restricting the sale of a luxury apartment in South Mumbai's Tardeo locality strictly to vegetarian buyers has sparked widespread backlash and reignited debates over dietary discrimination in Mumbai's housing market.
In the video posted on Wednesday, real estate agent Bhavesh Kaware gave a tour of a nearly-complete two-BHK flat measuring 900 square feet in an upcoming high-rise in Tardeo. The property was priced at Rs 6.50 crore and featured panoramic views of the city and the sea. During the presentation, Kaware explicitly asked only "pure vegetarian clients" to contact him for the property.
The listing prompted immediate outrage across social media platforms, drawing criticism from citizens and political leaders. Shinde Sena youth leader Gurjyot Singh Keer was among those who publicly questioned and criticised the exclusionary requirement. Commenters questioned how housing criteria could legally dictate personal dietary choices.
Following the widespread public criticism, Kaware deleted the video from social media. Before its removal, the clip had accumulated nearly three lakh views and more than 1,600 comments. The video did not clarify whether the restriction was an official rule imposed by the housing society or a condition introduced by the agent to market the flat.
The incident has brought renewed attention to long-standing patterns of housing discrimination across Mumbai. Prospective homebuyers and tenants have previously reported being denied housing based on non-vegetarian food habits in several neighbourhoods, including Ghatkopar, Mulund, Kandivali, and Powai.
