Thane and neighbouring districts placed on Red Alert as rainfall exceeds 140 mm

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Thane and neighbouring districts till July 6, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the region. The alert follows an intense monsoon spell that brought heavy downpours, with locations in nearby Bandra, Ghatkopar, and Lower Parel recording significant rainfall in the 24-hour period between 8 am on July 3 and 8 am on July 4. Several areas in the region recorded over 140 mm of rain during this timeframe.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded extensive rainfall data across various wards during this 24-hour period. In the western suburbs, the H West Ward Office recorded the highest rainfall in Mumbai at 150.6 mm. Other heavy downpours in the western suburbs were logged at Supari Tank Municipal School in Bandra with 146 mm, Pali Chimbai Municipal School in Bandra with 143.2 mm, Nariyalwadi School in Santacruz with 125 mm, and the Banana Leaf–Juhu Dispensary area with 120.8 mm.
In the eastern suburbs, the N Ward Office recorded 143 mm of rainfall. Additionally, Ramabai Municipal School in Ghatkopar logged 136.4 mm, Mankhurd Fire Station recorded 134.2 mm, Collector Colony Municipal School in Chembur received 127.6 mm, and MPS Maharashtra Nagar School in Mankhurd recorded 124 mm.
South Mumbai and city areas also experienced heavy showers. The G South Ward Office recorded 141.8 mm of rain, while the F North Ward Office logged 135.2 mm. The B Ward Office recorded 120.8 mm, Rawali Camp saw 118.28 mm, and the N.M. Joshi Marg Municipal School in Lower Parel received 118 mm.
Despite the heavy rainfall and persistent showers through the night, suburban railway services and road traffic remained largely operational on Saturday morning. However, authorities continued to monitor low-lying areas and flood-prone stretches.
The IMD's Red Alert covers Thane, Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, with forecasts predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the Konkan region and parts of central Maharashtra. Local authorities have advised residents to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel during periods of heavy downpours.
