Trainer Aircraft Overshoots Runway During Practice Run at Baramati Airport
A trainer aircraft belonging to Carver Aviation overshot the runway by approximately 20 feet during a training exercise at Baramati Airport in Pune around 12:09 pm. No casualties or injuries were reported, and the aircraft suffered no major damage.
Narayan Pawar, Police Inspector at Baramati Taluka Police Station, stated that the aircraft was being operated by Captain Chirag Doifode and Cadet Abhijeet Jhundre, who were conducting practice runs on the runway at the time of the incident. Pawar said police personnel arrived at the airport after receiving news of the event and inspected the site.
Pawar noted that during the practice runs, the 'Water Tango' aircraft failed to come to a stop during a manoeuvre. Instead, it overshot the runway by about 20 feet and came to rest in the surrounding grass.
Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill provided details regarding the sequence of events involving the aircraft, registered as VT-SEX. Gill stated that the trainer aircraft initially entered the airfield and lined up at the threshold of Runway 29. The pilot attempted to take off but aborted the attempt and brought the aircraft to a stop.
The aircraft was subsequently moved to the opposite end and lined up at the threshold of Runway 11. A second take-off was attempted and subsequently aborted. During this exercise, the aircraft could not be brought to a complete stop on the runway surface and continued beyond the threshold of Runway 29. It then veered off the extended paved surface to the right side beyond the threshold before coming to a halt.
Pawar confirmed that neither Captain Doifode nor Cadet Jhundre sustained injuries in the incident, and the aircraft did not suffer any major damage.
This incident marks the second aircraft-related incident in the region this year. Earlier in January, a Learjet 45 aircraft carrying late Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, his personal security officer, an attendant, and two cockpit crew members—pilot-in-command Sumit Kapur and first officer Shambhavi Pathak—crashed while attempting to land near Baramati Airport, resulting in the deaths of all five people on board.
