Woman Flags Lack of Security in Empty Midnight Local Train to Kalyan
A woman commuter raised concerns over passenger safety on Mumbai's suburban rail network after finding herself travelling in an empty ladies coach past midnight on a local train heading towards Kalyan, Dombivli, and Thakurli without visible security personnel.
The commuter shared her experience in a video uploaded to Instagram by the page together_under_one_roof. She stated that she was travelling between 11:30 pm and 12:30 am when she noticed the absence of police or security staff in the ladies compartment. She alleged that when she approached on-duty personnel for assistance, she was advised to shift into the general compartment instead.
In the video, recorded around 12:03 am, the woman spoke to Home Guard personnel at a station and pointed out that the ladies coach was nearly empty while passengers occupied the adjacent general coach. She stated she had originally planned to alight at Dombivli but chose to accompany another commuter up to Thakurli due to safety concerns.
The commuter stated that this was the fifth or sixth time she had encountered an unattended ladies coach on late-night Kalyan-bound services. She alleged that security personnel assigned to trains sometimes alight at Thakurli rather than continuing to the Kalyan terminus, leaving the compartment unmonitored during the final leg of the journey.
After raising the issue, the commuter spoke directly with the train's motorman to explain that she felt unsafe travelling alone without security. The motorman coordinated with railway officials to arrange assistance, and a female constable was subsequently assigned to accompany her following the stop at Thakurli.
The commuter reached Kalyan station at around 12:30 am. She clarified that she was not accusing all security personnel of neglecting their duties, noting that some constables routinely travel the full route to Kalyan, but urged railway authorities to enforce security coverage consistently on late-night services.
The social media post tagged Central Railway, the Railway Protection Force, and Mumbai Police to seek clarification regarding night-time security protocols. Railway authorities had not issued an official response regarding the specific claims at the time of reporting.
