New to Mumbai? How to not get swallowed by the city

The local trains, the spirit, the neighbourhoods, and why the sea is the city's therapist.

Mumbai is fast, loud, and weirdly warm-hearted once you crack it. Here's how to start.

The trains run everything

The local trains are the city's bloodstream. They're crowded in a way that has to be experienced, but they're also the fastest way across town. Learn the Western, Central and Harbour lines and you've basically got a master key.

Where to be

South Mumbai (Colaba, Fort, Marine Drive) is the old, grand, sea-facing heart. Bandra is the cool, creative, cafe-and-street-art west side. The suburbs north of there are where most people actually live and eat best.

The spirit

"Spirit of Mumbai" is a cliche because it's true. The city moves, hustles, and keeps going through anything. It's also one of the safer big cities to be out late in.

The sea is the reset button

When it's too much, you go to the sea. Marine Drive at sunset, Bandstand, Worli Sea Face. The whole city does it. Join in.
