Eating in Mumbai: vada pav to fine dining, the whole spectrum
The street-food canon, Irani cafes, the seafood, and the city's serious modern dining.
Mumbai might be India's best all-round eating city.
Street legends
Vada pav is the city's heartbeat, basically a spiced potato burger and the best two-minute meal anywhere. Then pav bhaji, bhel puri and the rest of the chaat canon.
Irani cafes
The old Irani cafes do bun maska, keema pav and chai with a side of fading-grandeur charm. Go for breakfast.
By the coast
Coastal and Malvani seafood is a must, especially around the older fishing neighbourhoods.
Modern Mumbai
Bandra, Lower Parel and South Mumbai have a deep, ambitious fine-dining and cocktail scene if you want to go big.
