13-Year-Old Girl Killed in Mumbra Building Gallery Slab Collapse
A 13-year-old girl died and five other residents were rescued on Monday evening after a second-floor gallery slab collapsed at Faiyaz Apartment in the Amrit Nagar area of Mumbra, Thane.
According to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), the gallery slab on the second floor of the four-storey building collapsed directly onto the first-floor gallery, trapping six occupants under the debris. Personnel from various agencies were deployed to the scene and successfully rescued all six people.
While five occupants escaped without serious injuries, 13-year-old Asma Kader Sheikh, a resident of room number 102, sustained critical injuries during the collapse. She was immediately rushed to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where attending doctors declared her dead.
Civic officials noted that the nearly four-decade-old residential structure is classified under the C2B category. The building comprises 30 flats, with around 15 to 20 currently occupied by residents.
Following the collapse, the Thane Municipal Corporation completely evacuated the building as a safety measure. The civic body has begun temporarily relocating approximately 70 to 80 displaced residents to nearby municipal schools.
"As a precautionary measure, the building has been completely evacuated, and residents are being shifted to safer accommodation," said Yasin M. Tadvi, Chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) at the Thane Municipal Corporation.
