30% of Mumbai Airport International Flights to Shift to Navi Mumbai from Oct 1
Nearly 30 per cent of international flights currently operating from Mumbai Airport are set to shift to Navi Mumbai International Airport from October 1, 2026. The major operational adjustments are part of a traffic-realignment plan shared by Mumbai Airport authorities with airlines ahead of the comprehensive redevelopment of Terminal 1.
According to the traffic-realignment schedule, around one-third of all air traffic movements at Mumbai Airport are expected to be transferred to Navi Mumbai International Airport from October 1. Shortly after this initial movement, another phase of adjustments will take place from October 25, during which one-third of the flights currently operating out of Terminal 1 will be moved over to Terminal 2.
The changes are being introduced to facilitate the ongoing redevelopment process at Mumbai Airport's Terminal 1. The infrastructure work will include major structural demolition, with demolition activity on the northern section of Terminal 1B officially scheduled to begin from January 1, 2027.
Together, Mumbai Airport’s Terminals 1 and 2 handle nearly 950 flight movements every single day. Terminal 1, an infrastructure facility that is around 80 years old, handles nearly 15 million passengers annually. In comparison, Terminal 2 has an annual capacity to accommodate around 40 million passengers per year.
The planned migration of flights marks a major step towards integrating Navi Mumbai International Airport into the broader aviation network of Mumbai. International flight operations at the Navi Mumbai airport commenced on July 15, 2026, when the facility's first international flight, operated by Air India Express as service IX-207, departed from the airport for Abu Dhabi.
In light of the impending changes to flight schedules and departure locations, passengers who have already booked their tickets are advised to check their airport and terminal details with their respective airlines before heading out to travel, ensuring they can plan their journeys accordingly.
