Afghan Church in Colaba Hosts ASCENSION Light Installation

Afghan Church in Colaba Hosts ASCENSION Light Installation

The historic Afghan Church in Colaba has been selected as the setting for ASCENSION, an immersive projection-mapping installation presented by the Floating Canvas Company as part of the Mumbai Light Festival. The three-day event takes place from August 27 to August 29, welcoming visitors between 7 PM and 10 PM.

Designed to showcase one of Colaba’s most recognisable historic landmarks after sunset, the installation uses light and digital projection to highlight and reimagine the church's Gothic architecture. Rather than projecting conventional visuals onto the building, the creative team developed the experience directly around the distinct architectural features of the church itself.

Throughout the installation, the church's Gothic arches, stained-glass elements, and intricate interior details are incorporated into the visual composition. Shifting patterns, radiant colours, and celestial imagery travel across the structure. The artistic concept draws inspiration from humanity’s fascination with looking beyond what is known, exploring the theme of reaching towards something larger through cosmic visuals and radiance.

The experience takes place inside the Afghan Church. Visitors can sit back inside the building and watch the projections move across the arches and stained-glass windows. The interplay between the changing light patterns and the building’s architectural details turns the heritage interiors into an immersive, dynamic artwork.

Entry to the ASCENSION event in Colaba is free of charge. Organizers have specified that members of the public interested in attending must complete prior registration on the official website before visiting the church.
