Amin Patel Demands BMC Meeting Over South Mumbai Birth Certificate Delays
Congress MLA and Deputy Leader in the Vidhan Sabha, Amin Patel, has written a letter to Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide seeking a high-level joint meeting to resolve long-pending civic issues related to minor corrections in birth certificates across South Mumbai.
The intervention comes amid growing complaints from citizens over bureaucratic delays when trying to fix minor clerical errors in official records. Patel highlighted that a large number of genuine applicants in South Mumbai are facing severe harassment and prolonged administrative delays at civic ward offices while attempting to rectify mistakes such as spelling errors, updating full names of children, or adding a father's name to birth certificates.
The situation has taken a particularly critical turn for students who have secured academic admissions in schools, colleges, and universities both within India and overseas. With crucial admission deadlines fast approaching, students are placed at risk of losing their seats due to delays in receiving rectified documents from local ward offices.
"People are being forced to make repeated visits to ward offices without any resolution. Many citizens, especially students are facing unnecessary delays and hardships. The situation is particularly distressing for students who urgently require corrected certificates to complete their admission formalities for academic institutions in India and overseas," Patel said in his communication.
Patel noted that he had recently convened a joint meeting to address the problem with the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (DMC) of Zone I, along with Assistant Commissioners and Medical Officers of Health representing A, B, and E wards. However, local ward officials conveyed that rectifying these minor errors requires explicit intervention and fresh policy directives from higher municipal authorities.
To expedite the rectification process and streamline document issuance, Patel requested Bhide to urgently convene a joint meeting in her chamber. He proposed that key civic officials—including the Sub-Registrar for Birth & Death Registration, DMCs of Health, Education, and Zone I, alongside Assistant Commissioners and Health Officers of A, B, C, D, and E wards—be summoned to establish a clear solution and prevent further inconvenience to residents.
