Andheri Resident Booked for Driving Wrong Way in Coastal Road Tunnel

Gamdevi police have registered a criminal case against a 37-year-old resident of Andheri for allegedly driving a car in the wrong direction inside the Coastal Road tunnel and endangering the lives of other motorists. Police said the accused was also operating the vehicle without a valid driving licence.
According to police officials, the incident occurred between 10.05 pm and 10.15 pm on August 19 along the northbound carriageway of the Coastal Road. The accused, identified as Datta Daji Zinjurde, was allegedly seen driving against the flow of traffic inside the tunnel corridor.
When police personnel stationed along the route noticed the vehicle moving in the wrong direction and signalled the driver to pull over and stop, Zinjurde allegedly defied the instructions. Instead of complying with the directives of the on-duty officers, he fled in the same direction, continuing his reckless movement inside the tunnel. Investigators noted that his actions posed an immediate and serious risk to his own safety as well as to that of other commuters using the Coastal Road at the time.
A formal case was subsequently registered by the Gamdevi police on August 20 at 3.17 pm. The action followed an official complaint lodged by 37-year-old police constable Kalpesh Janardan Nagare.
In addition to the driver, the police have booked the owner of the vehicle, identified as Farooq Sheikh. Investigators stated that Sheikh was named in the case for permitting Zinjurde to operate the car despite having full knowledge that he did not possess a valid driving licence.
The accused individuals have been booked under Sections 281, 125, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have also invoked several relevant provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act, including Sections 122, 177, 181, and 184, concerning unauthorised driving, dangerous operation, and traffic violations.
