Bangladeshi National Arrested at Mumbai Airport Over Fraudulent Passport
Sahar Police on Sunday arrested a 36-year-old Bangladeshi national at Mumbai International Airport in Sahar for allegedly using a fraudulently obtained Indian passport. The accused was identified by police officials as Babu Biswas, who also goes by the alias Tapas Biswas.
The arrest took place following Biswas's arrival at the airport on a flight from Colombo. Police officials stated that immigration and police personnel grew suspicious of the accused after observing his accent, which allegedly resembled that of a Bangladeshi national. During initial interrogation by officers, Biswas allegedly admitted to having entered India illegally alongside his family through the West Bengal border in 2016, when he was 26 years old.
Further questioning by the police revealed details regarding how the accused obtained his Indian identity papers. While residing in West Bengal, Biswas allegedly managed to procure a fake Aadhaar card and a PAN card with the assistance of a local individual. Using these forged documents, he then allegedly applied for and obtained an Indian passport from the Passport Office in Kolkata in 2019.
According to police officers, Biswas had used the fraudulently acquired passport for multiple international trips prior to his detention. Investigation details showed that he had previously travelled to the Maldives twice and to Colombo once using the same Indian passport before his attempt to travel further was halted at the airport on Sunday.
The suspect's Bangladeshi nationality was formally confirmed after his wife, Rakhi Biswas, sent official documentation via WhatsApp. The sent papers included land records from Faridpur, Bangladesh, which were printed out and submitted to police and immigration authorities.
Upon confirming his true nationality, Mumbai Police produced Biswas before officers of the Immigration Wing for further investigation into the illegal border entry, forgery, and unauthorized travel. Police officials added that further details regarding the case are currently awaited as the investigation remains underway.
