BMC Chief Ashwini Bhide Directs Timely Completion of Bandra and Mumbai STPs

On 18 July, 2026, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ashwini Bhide directed civic officials to ensure the timely completion and operationalization of Mumbai's under-construction Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), including the facility in Bandra. The directive aims to fast-track the vital infrastructure needed to improve the quality of water discharged into the sea.
The BMC is currently constructing these advanced STPs at seven key locations across the city: Bandra, Worli, Dharavi, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Versova, and Malad. Once fully functional, these seven under-construction projects will significantly boost Mumbai's sewage treatment capacity, adding a combined 2,464 million litres per day (MLD) of treatment capability.
During her review of the ongoing works, Commissioner Bhide expressed satisfaction with the progress of certain key sites. Specifically, she noted that the work on the Malad Sewage Treatment Plant is progressing at a satisfactory pace and expressed her satisfaction with the project's current status.
However, the Commissioner emphasized that all seven under-construction STPs across Mumbai must be completed strictly within their stipulated timelines. She instructed officials to coordinate closely to ensure that these facilities are made operational without any delay.
This major expansion of sewage infrastructure follows the completion of an earlier project in south Mumbai. A 37 MLD capacity STP at Colaba was completed and commissioned in April 2020. The seven new plants represent a massive increase in capacity compared to the Colaba facility, aiming to address wastewater treatment needs across the suburbs and city center.
With the Commissioner's latest directive, the BMC is pushing to complete the remaining plants to prevent untreated waste from polluting the coastal waters.
