BMC Fast-Tracks Sion Railway Bridge Reconstruction for September 2026

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has expedited the reconstruction of the bridge near Sion railway station, directing executing agencies to finish all work by September 30, 2026. The new timeline advances the project by nearly five months from its original tender deadline of February 2027.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar inspected the ongoing construction work in Sion and instructed officials to accelerate progress across both railway and civic sections. The bridge is being reconstructed by Central Railway under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-2), while the BMC Bridge Department is renewing and strengthening the approach roads within civic limits.

Work is currently progressing on the approach road connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Road on the western side of Sion Bridge to Sant Rohidas Road in Dharavi. As part of the broader project to facilitate safer pedestrian movement, an underground pedestrian walkway on Lal Bahadur Shastri Road was constructed and opened on February 20, 2026. A second reconstructed underground walkway on Sant Rohidas Road was opened to the public on July 14.

Central Railway is currently working on the deck slab for the first girder. The second girder was launched across the railway tracks on August 9, 2026. Once that girder is settled onto its bearings, railway teams will commence deck slab work on the second section.

Execution of the approach road on the eastern side remains pending because the contractor for Central Railway is currently using the space for railway-related operations. The BMC stated that it is prepared to complete the eastern approach road within approximately 45 days once the railway administration hands over the site.

The civic body noted that it is maintaining close coordination with Central Railway authorities to prioritise remaining tasks. Once completed, the rebuilt Sion Bridge is expected to ease vehicular traffic along the busy Sion-Dharavi corridor and improve pedestrian accessibility across the railway lines.
