BMC Imposes 15% Water Cut Across Parts of Mumbai for 20 Hours

Residents in several parts of Mumbai are facing a 15% reduction in their daily water supply for a duration of 20 hours starting Tuesday morning, July 28. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the water cut across the island city, western suburbs, and eastern suburbs to undertake critical maintenance and infrastructure work at the Panjrapur pumping station and Bhandup Water Treatment Plant.
The planned shutdown is scheduled to commence at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, and will extend until 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29. Throughout this 20-hour timeframe, the flow of water from the Panjrapur Mumbai-3A Pumping Station to the Bhandup Water Treatment Plant will remain suspended. Consequently, water distribution to households and civic networks across the affected areas in Mumbai will be reduced.
The ongoing maintenance work forms part of a broader infrastructure upgrade initiative undertaken by the civic body at its Panjrapur facility. As part of the project's first phase, the BMC is replacing four of the ten ageing 6.6 kV high-tension control panels at the pumping station with brand-new, more efficient units. The civic body confirmed that the remaining six control panels will be replaced in subsequent phases of the project.
Explaining the necessity of the shutdown, the civic body noted that the pumping station must remain shut for approximately 20 hours. This step is required to ensure that the critical replacement of the high-tension control panels is executed safely and in a planned manner. The BMC emphasized that the temporary suspension of water supply during this maintenance window was completely unavoidable.
In light of the reduced supply, the civic administration has issued an official appeal to residents across the affected eastern suburbs, western suburbs, and the island city. Citizens have been urged by civic authorities to use water judiciously throughout the maintenance period and extend their full cooperation, as the daily water supply to these areas may be reduced by up to 15% during the maintenance.
