BMC to Develop Miyawaki Urban Forests on 238 Plots Across Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to develop urban forest pockets across 238 plots in Mumbai using the Japanese Miyawaki technique, reviving an environmental initiative originally launched in 2020.

Civic officials are assessing the 238 identified plots across the city where trees can potentially be cultivated under the dense plantation method. The planned work aims to build upon earlier phases of urban greening managed by the civic body.

Following the original 2020 rollout of the urban forest initiative, the BMC successfully developed urban forests across more than 60 open spaces over a period of two years.

The project was subsequently stalled until municipal authorities could identify new and optimal plots across Mumbai for further afforestation work.

According to information provided by the civic body, plots that already had existing gardens and where landscaping and horticulture were flourishing were not touched during the site selection process.
