Chembur Tree Fall Kills 11-Year-Old Boy, Sparking Backlash Against BMC

An 11-year-old boy was killed in Chembur, Mumbai, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, after a tree collapsed and crushed a passing bus. The fatal incident has sparked intense criticism against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for its failure to prevent recurring tree-fall tragedies across the city.

The tragedy occurred when a tree fell onto a bus traveling through the Chembur area. The impact of the collapse crushed the vehicle, resulting in the death of the young boy. The incident has once again raised serious concerns regarding the safety of Mumbai's trees and the municipal corporation's oversight of hazardous foliage.

Following the accident, Venkatesh Naidu, a Mumbai resident who lost his own son to a similar incident, publicly condemned the BMC. Naidu accused the civic body of failing to learn from past tragedies and continuing to ignore warning signs until lives are lost.

Naidu’s son, 25-year-old Tejas Naidu, was killed on May 26, 2025, during a tree collapse at Ganesh Maidan in Vikhroli, Mumbai. That incident occurred amid heavy rainfall in the area.

Reflecting on the loss of his son and the recent death in Chembur, Venkatesh Naidu criticized the BMC's handling of these fatal events. He described the compensation provided by the municipal corporation as highly inadequate.

According to Naidu, the BMC's response to his son's death consisted of a vaguely worded reply sent via email and an ex gratia payment of Rs 1 lakh. Naidu expressed deep anger over the civic body's valuation of human life under these circumstances.

"A vaguely worded reply via mail and Rs 1 lakh ex gratia — that’s the worth of a life according to the BMC," Naidu said.

The latest fatality in Chembur has amplified demands from residents for the BMC to take immediate, proactive measures to identify and manage weak trees, ensuring that such preventable accidents do not claim more lives in the city.
