Colaba Observatory Records 1,590 MM Rainfall as Monsoon Persists

Colaba and the rest of Mumbai woke up to cloudy skies, light drizzle, and gusty winds on Tuesday morning as ongoing monsoon conditions persisted across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast a day of light to moderate rainfall across the region, though no official rain alert was issued for Mumbai.

The meteorological data highlights a significant increase in seasonal precipitation compared to the previous year. According to official figures released by the IMD, the Colaba observatory has recorded 1,590.3 mm of rainfall so far this monsoon season. This figure accounts for 75.91 per cent of Colaba’s average annual rainfall and represents a 31 per cent increase compared to the amount recorded during the same period in 2025.

Across the city, the Santacruz observatory recorded 1,883.9 mm of rainfall during the same period. That total accounts for 81.24 per cent of its average annual rainfall and marks a 26 per cent rise over the rainfall recorded on the corresponding date last year. Overall, Mumbai has recorded substantially higher rainfall totals than during the same period last year.

For Tuesday, the IMD predicted that the city and its surrounding suburbs would experience generally cloudy skies accompanied by light rainfall throughout the day. However, weather officials noted that isolated pockets could see moderate to heavy showers along with occasional gusty winds.

Wind speeds across Mumbai were expected to remain between 40 and 50 kmph during the day, with gusts likely reaching between 50 and 60 kmph during periods of intense rainfall spells. Temperature readings showed a minimum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius in the morning, while the maximum temperature was expected to hover around 31 degrees Celsius.

In addition to bringing heavy precipitation, the sustained monsoon activity has helped maintain healthy air quality levels across the city. Official monitoring data showed that Mumbai's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 36 on Tuesday morning. This places the city's air quality firmly within the 'Good' category, which covers readings between 0 and 50. Under standard environmental classifications, an AQI in this range indicates clean air that poses minimal health risks to the general public.
