Executive Arrested After Reversing SUV into Police Bike on Linking Road in Khar
Around 2:00 AM on Friday, a 27-year-old firm executive was arrested after driving his SUV at high speed in reverse to evade a drunk-driving checkpoint on Linking Road in Khar (West), crashing into a patrolling police motorcycle and injuring a constable.
The accused, identified by Mumbai Police as Siddharth Mahalingam, a resident of Chandivli, allegedly attempted to escape after spotting a traffic naka-bandi that had been set up along the road to check motorists for drunk driving. According to police, Mahalingam reversed his vehicle at high speed despite other motorists approaching from the same direction.
The reversing SUV rammed into a department motorcycle ridden by 44-year-old police constable Ashok Borude, who was stationed on night patrol approximately 25 metres away from the police checkpoint.
The force of the impact caused Borude's lower jaw to get lodged in the rear windshield of the SUV. The constable suffered severe facial injuries and was taken to the hospital, where he received 12 stitches on his lower jaw and three stitches on his forehead before being discharged. Medical personnel have advised him to take 10 days of rest.
In his official complaint, Borude detailed the moments leading up to the collision. He explained that he had stopped his department motorcycle after spotting the SUV accelerating towards him in reverse. Despite wearing a helmet, his lower jaw became stuck in the SUV's rear glass upon impact. Borude added that he managed to move aside after the crash, preventing him from being struck by other vehicles coming from behind.
Following the crash, police subjected Mahalingam to a breath analyser test, which revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 166.8 ug/100 ml, well above the permissible legal limit.
Mumbai Police subsequently registered a case against Mahalingam under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 110 for attempt to commit culpable homicide, 125(a), 281, and 324(4). He was also booked under Sections 184 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Police confirmed that Mahalingam has been remanded to judicial custody.
