Heavy Rain Causes Waterlogging On Thane-Belapur Road, Delays Central Line Trains
Heavy rainfall lashed Thane and surrounding parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Tuesday morning, causing waterlogging on key routes such as the Thane-Belapur Road and delaying suburban train services. Thane, which had been witnessing rainfall since Monday night, recorded 11.69 mm of rain over a 22-hour period before conditions eased around 7 am.
The downpour began around 4 am in the eastern and western suburbs and remained intense through the early hours. Heavy showers in Mumbra, Mahape, and Airoli resulted in waterlogging at several locations. On the roads, standing water affected traffic on the Thane-Belapur Road, while potholes slowed vehicles along the Sion-Belapur Highway. Slow vehicle movement was also reported on LBS Marg between Bhandup and Vikhroli, the Eastern Express Highway, the Western Express Highway, and in western suburbs including Andheri, Vile Parle, and Jogeshwari. Chaotic traffic scenes occurred at Worli Naka and Ganpatrao Kadam Marg, though the JVLR and SCLR corridors remained relatively smooth.
Suburban train operations were impacted by the heavy rain across the region. Trains on the Harbour Line operated 10 to 15 minutes late, while Central Railway services were delayed by around five to seven minutes. Western Railway trains continued to run on schedule. Railway authorities maintained a close watch on the situation as rainfall persisted in parts of the region.
The India Meteorological Department forecast light rain in Mumbai during the day, with isolated areas likely to receive moderate to heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 kmph during intense spells. No rain alert has been issued for Mumbai for the week. However, the IMD indicated that a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal within 24 hours could bring a fresh spell of rainfall across Maharashtra starting August 13.
In response to the weather, airline SpiceJet issued an advisory warning passengers that adverse weather could affect arrivals, departures, and connecting flights at Mumbai airport, urging travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
