Heavy Rains and Orange Alert Disrupt Traffic and Trains in Thane and Mumbai
Heavy morning rainfall on Tuesday triggered waterlogging and traffic disruptions across Thane, Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange nowcast warning for the region. The alert, issued at 11:24 a.m. on August 11, warned of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and moderate rainfall across Mumbai Suburban as intense monsoon activity continued.
The IMD nowcast warning remained valid until 2:24 p.m. According to official weather forecasts, thunderstorms and lightning were expected to be accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 60 kmph, alongside moderate rainfall measuring between 5 and 15 mm per hour. The weather department advised residents to exercise caution, warning that intense rain spells could result in difficult travel conditions and waterlogging in vulnerable localities.
Public transport and commuter travel were hit early in the day as heavy showers began around 4 a.m. Local train services were delayed, with trains on the Harbour Line running late by 10 to 15 minutes. Services on the Central Railway were also affected, operating five to seven minutes behind schedule. Road traffic across Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mumbai faced disruptions due to waterlogged stretches following the early morning downpour.
In light of the unsettled weather conditions, the IMD advised citizens to check road and traffic updates before embarking on journeys and to avoid unnecessary travel during the warning window. The department explicitly cautioned residents against seeking shelter under trees or weak structures during thunderstorms and gusty winds, emphasizing the importance of taking necessary safety precautions and adhering to advisories issued by local authorities until weather conditions stabilize.
The weather agency noted that persistent monsoon activity had brought intense rainfall across multiple areas since the early hours of Tuesday, with unsettled weather expected to continue throughout the day. While isolated areas may receive moderate to heavy showers, the IMD indicated that a fresh spell of rainfall across Maharashtra is anticipated to begin from August 13.
