Inquiry Ordered Into Kalwa Hospital Diagnostics Over Flawed Child MRI Report
The administration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Medical College in Kalwa, Thane, has instituted a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the operations of Messrs Krishna Diagnostics following an allegedly erroneous brain scan of a 12-year-old child. Hospital Dean Dr Swapnali Kadam issued the formal order on September 8, 2026, setting up the panel after receiving complaints about the diagnostic facility situated on the hospital premises.
The committee comprises Dr Umachilla Shetty, Head of Radiology; Dr Arun Mane, Head of Surgery; and Dr Aniruddha Malgaonkar, Medical Superintendent. According to a hospital administration official, the appointed panel will conduct a detailed technical audit of the procedures followed by Krishna Diagnostics and submit a comprehensive report directly to the hospital administration to ensure complete transparency.
The investigation arises from an incident that began on July 21, when a 12-year-old patient underwent a brain MRI scan at the Krishna Diagnostics centre inside the Kalwa hospital. The report issued by the facility concluded that the young patient had suffered severe brain damage.
Alarmed by the severe diagnosis, the child's family sought a second medical opinion and arranged another MRI scan at a different facility two days later. The subsequent scan showed that the child's brain was completely normal, displaying no signs of trauma, injury, or underlying damage.
The contradictory findings caused significant mental agony and emotional trauma to the patient's family. The issue was subsequently escalated to hospital authorities through a formal written complaint submitted on August 4 by Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena leaders, including General Secretary Sandeep Pachange and Kalyan City President Ankush Rajput.
Pachange noted that the conflicting reports had put the family through immense distress and stated that the organisation has formally demanded the registration of a strict criminal case against the private agency for playing with a young patient's life. The inquiry ordered by civic hospital authorities will examine the diagnostic process to fix administrative and technical accountability.
