Landslides Triggered By 670mm Rain In Lonavala Disrupt Mumbai-Pune Trains

Heavy rainfall of nearly 670 mm in Lonavala, a popular hill station in Pune district, triggered multiple landslides along the Karjat-Lonavala ghat section of the Mumbai-Pune railway line, severely disrupting train services. The intense downpour, recorded during the 24-hour period ending at 7 am on Monday, July 6, 2026, caused significant damage to the railway tracks.
According to official data, the extreme weather event led to landslides at several vulnerable locations along the ghat section. The resulting debris and track damage forced railway officials and authorities to immediately intervene to manage the unfolding situation on the tracks.
The impact on the vital transit route was severe, affecting train operations over a period of two days. To ensure safety and address the damage along the line, railway authorities had to cancel, divert, and reschedule multiple trains that connect the major cities of Mumbai and Pune.
Officials confirmed that the unprecedented rainfall of nearly 670 mm was the direct cause of the landslides in the hilly terrain. The Karjat-Lonavala ghat section, which is highly sensitive to heavy downpours, experienced multiple blockages, making it impossible for regular train services to run safely.
The severe weather in Lonavala, which is located in Pune district, disrupted the travel plans of numerous passengers. The rail traffic on the Mumbai-Pune railway line remained heavily impacted as authorities dealt with the aftermath of the landslides and the damaged tracks.
