Maharashtra Medical Admissions: 75% Quota Seats Filled in First Round
More than three-fourths of medical and dental degree seats under Maharashtra's state quota have been filled during the first round of admissions for the 2026-27 academic year, according to data released by the Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test Cell on Sunday in Mumbai.
A total of 8,001 of the 10,646 available MBBS and BDS seats were taken, registering an overall occupancy rate of 75.15%. This leaves 2,645 seats open across the state for the second round of counselling.
The admission figures highlight a significant disparity in demand between the two programmes. MBBS recorded an occupancy rate of 84.58%, with students claiming 6,876 of the 8,129 available seats. Only 1,253 MBBS seats remained unfilled at the end of the round.
Government medical colleges saw the highest demand, filling 4,665 of their 4,980 MBBS seats to reach an occupancy rate of 93.67%, leaving just 415 seats vacant. Among the students admitted to government medical colleges, 888 froze their seats to confirm their allotment, while 3,677 chose betterment to seek higher-preference options in the next round. Private medical colleges filled 2,311 of 3,149 MBBS seats, marking a 73.38% occupancy rate with 838 vacancies. In private colleges, 249 candidates froze their admissions and 2,062 opted for betterment.
In contrast, more than half of the state's Bachelor of Dental Surgery seats remained vacant. Out of 2,517 available BDS seats, only 1,125 were taken, resulting in an occupancy rate of 44.69% and leaving 1,392 seats open for round two.
Government dental colleges filled 196 of 317 BDS seats, achieving a 61.82% occupancy rate with 121 vacancies. Of those admitted, 19 froze their seats and 177 applied for betterment. Private dental colleges saw 929 of 2,200 seats filled, an occupancy rate of 42.22%, leaving 1,271 seats vacant. Among admitted private dental students, 161 froze their seats and 768 opted for betterment.
The CET Cell will publish the seat matrix for the second round on September 7. Candidates will be allowed to submit or revise their college and course preferences between September 8 and September 10, and the second-round seat allotment results will be declared on September 12.
