Maharashtra to Legalise Bike Taxis From August 1 With Domicile Rule

The Maharashtra government has announced that it will officially legalise bike taxis across the state starting August 1. This decision marks a significant policy shift, reversing the government's previous crackdown on two-wheeler commercial transport services.

Under the new regulatory framework, bike taxis will be permitted to legally operate on the roads of Maharashtra. The decision is expected to bring relief to many operators and commuters who rely on two-wheeler transport for daily travel.

However, the state government has introduced specific eligibility criteria for those wishing to run these services. To be eligible to operate, bike taxi drivers must hold a local domicile certificate.

This policy change represents a complete reversal of the state's previous stance, where bike taxi operations faced strict crackdowns from authorities. By legalising the service with the local domicile requirement, the Maharashtra government aims to regulate the sector while ensuring local drivers are prioritised.
