Mentally Ill Man Detained at Sanpada Station Over Koparkhairane Harassment Video
The Vashi Railway Police took a 23-year-old mentally ill man into custody at Sanpada railway station within six hours of launching a search operation, following a viral social media video that showed him allegedly harassing women passengers at Koparkhairane railway station on August 8.
Following his detention and a subsequent medical examination, police initiated legal action against the man under Section 23 of the Mental Healthcare Act.
The accused has been identified as 23-year-old Sudhir Bablu Chahande. According to police details, Chahande was currently residing on a footpath in Ulhasnagar within Thane district. He is originally a resident of Anand Nagar, Pulfail, in Wardha district.
The action was taken after a video circulated on social media platforms on August 8 depicted Chahande allegedly troubling women passengers at Koparkhairane railway station. Taking cognisance of the viral clip, senior police officers issued directions to the Vashi Railway Police to identify, trace, and take legal action against the individual involved.
A police team immediately began searching for the suspect and managed to trace him to Sanpada railway station, where he was taken into custody within six hours.
Speaking about the case, Senior Police Inspector Kiran Undre from Vashi Government Railway Police (GRP) confirmed that their team immediately began tracking the person after the video went viral. He stated that the police managed to locate and apprehend him at Sanpada railway station within six hours, and an inquiry revealed that he is a mentally ill person, leading to necessary legal action under Section 23 of the Mental Healthcare Act after a medical examination.
The police operation was conducted under the direct orders and supervision of Rakesh Kalasagar, Commissioner of Police, Railway Mumbai; Pragya Jedge, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Division, Railway Mumbai; and Sopan Kakad, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Harbour Division, Railway Mumbai.
The team executing the operation comprised Senior Police Inspector Kiran Undre, Woman Police Inspector Vinaya Parasur, Assistant Police Inspector Jogdand, and Police Sub-Inspectors Mogal, Satish Jadhav, Dharmaraj Pardhi, and Javanjal, along with other police personnel.
