Mira Road Crane Collapse Kills Man and Sparks Protests Against JP Infra Builder

A 21-year-old man was killed and a crane operator was injured after a construction crane collapsed on Thursday at the JP North residential complex in Mira Road. The fatal accident sparked an immediate protest by the victim's family and local residents, who staged a sit-in at the Kashigaon police station until 4 a.m. on Friday to demand that the builder, JP Infra, be booked alongside the contractor.
The victim has been identified as Mohammed Mujjamil Khokhar. According to the Kashigaon police, Khokhar was sitting in the compound of the Mira Road housing complex, playing a game on his mobile phone, when the crane suddenly collapsed. The heavy machinery trapped him underneath, and he died on the spot. The operator of the crane also sustained injuries in the incident.
Following the fatal collapse, the victim's family members and local residents gathered to demand justice. They staged a prolonged sit-in protest at the Kashigaon police station, which lasted until around 4 a.m. on Friday. The protestors are demanding that the builder also be named as an accused in the case.
The victim's father, Abdul Khokhar, has refused to accept his son's body or perform his last rites until the police book the builder. "We will neither accept my son’s body nor perform his last rites until the builder is booked. I will continue my fight until my son gets justice and the real culprits are sent to jail," he said.
Residents of the JP North housing complex have backed the family's demands. The residents alleged that they had previously raised repeated complaints regarding safety issues at the construction site, but these warnings were ignored by the authorities and the builders before the crane came crashing down.
