MMRCC Launches Statewide Drive to Aid Maharashtra Families Hit by Nepal Floods
The Maharashtra Mountaineers Rescue Coordination Centre (MMRCC), operating under the Akhil Maharashtra Giryarohan Mahasangh (AMGM), has launched a statewide initiative from Navi Mumbai to assist families of Maharashtra citizens missing in the recent Nepal flood disaster. The organisation is coordinating the identification and repatriation of mortal remains alongside the Maharashtra government, Nepal Police, and the Embassy of India in Kathmandu.
The Maharashtra government requested MMRCC to provide families across the state with necessary information regarding the identification and transfer of bodies and to manage the process at the district level. District units of the AMGM are now reaching out directly to affected families to explain the official identification procedures being handled by the Nepal government and Indian embassy officials.
Hundreds of families across Maharashtra have been impacted by the disaster and remain waiting for news of their missing relatives. AMGM President Umesh Zirpe urged families with missing first-degree relatives to inspect the photographs and details of unidentified and recovered bodies uploaded on the Nepal Police disaster portal.
Families have been instructed to fill out an official MMRCC Google Form regardless of whether they spot their relative on the portal. For cases where a relative is identified online, the Embassy of India in Kathmandu will coordinate with local Nepalese authorities to facilitate the handover and repatriation of mortal remains.
In instances where bodies remain unidentified, DNA matching with first-degree relatives—parents, children, or siblings—will be required. The Nepal government has temporarily buried several unidentified bodies to mitigate public health risks. Because many families cannot travel directly to Kathmandu, MMRCC will manage the collection of DNA-related details across Maharashtra districts to forward to authorities via the state government.
The initiative is being overseen by MMRCC Chief Coordinator Sunil Gaikwad. MMRCC confirmed that all submitted family information will remain strictly confidential and will be utilized solely for identification and repatriation purposes.
