MMRDA Completes 90 Percent of Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority announced on Sunday, July 26, 2026, that approximately 90 percent of the construction work on the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project has been completed. The infrastructure initiative is designed to directly enhance monorail access from Worli and South Mumbai by linking three vital public transit nodes in the area: the Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail Station, Metro Line 3, and the Mahalaxmi Suburban Railway Station. The key highlight of this project is India’s first travellator-equipped skywalk.
A main goal of the project is to integrate the multi-transit interchange and dramatically reduce overall transfer times for daily commuters. Officials state that the completed facility will cut connection and transfer time between the suburban rail, metro, and monorail networks by approximately 20 minutes. MMRDA expects this improved connectivity to make switching between different transit systems much more efficient, thereby encouraging greater overall reliance on public transport.
In terms of structural specifications, the complex includes a 283-metre-long integrated pedestrian bridge. The structure features an 11-metre-wide path designated for continuous passenger movement. To assist commuters in traversing the connection smoothly, the project incorporates six travellators with a total combined length of 176 metres. Universal accessibility is supported through the inclusion of two dedicated passenger lifts. Once fully operational, the system will have the structural capacity to handle approximately 4,500 passengers every hour.
Carrying out the construction required addressing complex municipal infrastructure surrounding the transit site. Before foundation works for the pedestrian facility could begin, MMRDA relocated a massive 1,800 mm diameter storm water drain. Despite the heavy structural modifications required for the project, adjacent water supply pipelines and sewer lines were kept completely undisturbed, ensuring that surrounding neighborhoods experienced uninterrupted civic services throughout the construction phase.
