MSRDC Begins Safety Action Plan on Pune-Mumbai Expressway Missing Link

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has initiated a comprehensive safety action plan for the Pune-Mumbai Expressway's Missing Link project following expert recommendations from IIT Bombay. The initiative follows a landslide that occurred near the project's tunnel on July 6, prompting safety assessments aimed at achieving zero fatalities and zero rockfalls on the carriageway.

Following the July 6 incident, MSRDC commissioned experts from IIT Bombay to inspect the site and propose engineering solutions to strengthen the project's resilience against landslides and extreme weather. During the study, IIT Bombay assessed rainfall patterns using a 1,000-year return period model, replacing the previous design based on a 100-year rainfall assessment to account for increasingly intense rainfall events.

The expert panel concluded that enhanced safety measures were required to minimise the risk of slope failures and prevent debris from reaching the roadway. Key recommendations include diverting the natural flow of rainwater away from the tunnel and carriageway, installing stronger steel wire mesh to secure loose rocks, stabilising steep mountain slopes, and redesigning natural drainage channels.

Work on implementing the expert panel's recommendations has already begun, according to MSRDC Superintendent Engineer Rahul Vasaikar. The implementation plan has been divided into two distinct phases: immediate short-term interventions during the ongoing monsoon season and permanent structural works to be executed after the rains subside.

The immediate measures commenced over the past two days and focus on securing loose boulders and installing protective netting. MSRDC expects these initial works to be completed within eight to ten days to provide immediate protection during current weather conditions.

Since continuous rainfall has left the surrounding soil saturated, large-scale long-term works such as diverting drainage channels will be taken up only after the monsoon concludes. These permanent measures are expected to take one to two months to complete once weather conditions improve.

The Missing Link project is a vital infrastructure initiative designed to reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. MSRDC officials stated that the protection measures will safeguard commuters and infrastructure while ensuring the long-term safety of the project.
