Mumbai Auto and Taxi Drivers Begin Using Marathi as Language Mandate Takes Effect

Auto rickshaw and taxi drivers across Mumbai began using more Marathi on Saturday as a mandate making the language compulsory for them came into effect.

While a number of drivers are yet to speak Marathi fluently or confidently, and several have not yet completed the required certification course, many were seen making an effort to incorporate basic Marathi phrases into their daily communications with passengers.

Drivers have shown a positive approach to adopting the language during their routine trips. Some drivers, including Imam Shaikh, Salim Kureshi, and Ramdas Kanojia, noted that learning through real-life conversations with commuters has been easier than studying in a classroom environment.

For many commercial drivers across the city, the process of adapting to the requirement remains an ongoing learning experience through day-to-day interactions on the road.
