Onion Prices Hit ₹53 Per Kg at Navi Mumbai APMC, Retail Rates Reach ₹70
Wholesale onion prices crossed the ₹50 mark at the APMC market in Navi Mumbai on September 7, 2026, reaching ₹52 to ₹53 per kg following supply disruptions triggered by rainfall in producing regions. The sharp increase has pushed retail rates across the region to between ₹65 and ₹70 per kg, putting severe pressure on household grocery budgets.
The price jump follows steady increases over recent days. Last month, wholesale onions traded between ₹40 and ₹45 per kg before climbing past ₹50. On September 7, approximately 150 truckloads of onions arrived at the APMC wholesale market, but arrivals were insufficient to counter rising costs caused by crop damage in key onion-growing belts.
A wholesaler at the APMC market noted that rain had curtailed arrivals even as consumer demand held steady. The trader explained that supply had been affected in some areas due to rainfall while demand remained consistent, adding that prices are likely to remain firm until fresh arrivals increase.
Retail vendors reported being forced to pass the increased procurement costs on to consumers. A local retailer explained that they are purchasing stock at much higher rates than before, making it unviable to sell at earlier price levels. The retailer noted that customers have begun purchasing smaller quantities because of the elevated rates.
Consumers described mounting strain on everyday kitchen spending. Zakira M, a homemaker, said that onions are an unavoidable basic kitchen ingredient, but costs of ₹65 to ₹70 per kg force households to think twice before buying. She added that high rates for several other vegetables have made managing monthly grocery budgets increasingly difficult.
Similar price pressures have been recorded outside Maharashtra, with wholesale onion rates in Delhi and Bengaluru markets already touching around ₹50 per kg amid concerns over reduced production from rain damage. While a recent respite from heavy rainfall has facilitated trading conditions at the Navi Mumbai market, local traders expect prices to remain elevated until the supply of fresh harvests increases substantially.
