Over 10 Injured as Construction Crane Collapses in Mumbai's Kurla

More than 10 people were injured after a large crane collapsed at a construction site in the densely populated Qureshi Nagar area of Kurla in the early hours of Friday. The heavy machinery tilted and crashed toward an adjacent structure, prompting an immediate rescue and relief operation by local authorities, police personnel, and firefighters.
According to a statement issued by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), demolition work was being undertaken at Building No. 1 of Bhandari Metallurgy in Kurla. The crane had been brought to the location for the demolition work but had not yet started operations when the accident took place.
MMRDA stated that the crane tilted to one side and fell onto adjacent construction while it was being positioned on site. Prima facie assessments indicated that soft and muddy ground at the location compromised the stability of the heavy crane. The authority noted that a few people sustained minor injuries in the incident.
The collapse triggered panic across the neighbourhood as debris crashed onto a nearby house and surrounding structures. Portions of the massive crane were seen lying across buildings and blocking a local road. Officials confirmed that while more than 10 people sustained injuries and received medical assistance, no individuals were feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident also impacted nearby railway infrastructure. Central Railway confirmed that the fallen crane made contact with the overhead electric equipment of the single railway line running between Kurla and Trombay. Because this specific line is primarily utilized for goods movement, Central Railway clarified that regular passenger train operations were not disrupted.
MMRDA deployed manpower and heavy machinery to the site to clear the fallen crane on priority. Emergency teams secured the vicinity and implemented safety precautions while coordinating ongoing clearance operations.
