Reliance Foundation to Plant Over 75,000 Trees at Mumbai Coastal Road Gardens

MUMBAI — A major environmental initiative has been launched to transform the Coastal Road gardens in Mumbai into a massive green space, with plans to plant more than 75,000 trees across a 130-acre area. The announcement was made on Friday by Nita Ambani, the chairperson of the Reliance Foundation, who outlined the vision for the project.
According to Ambani, the extensive planting project is intended to establish a vast new green lung for the city of Mumbai. Work on the development has already commenced, with a dedicated team of landscape architects, ecologists, and engineers collaborating to draft and finalize the master plan for the 130 acres of land.
The project is already seeing physical progress on the ground. Official reports indicate that 15,000 trees have already been brought on site to prepare for the upcoming planting phase.
The finished gardens will not only host a significant tree cover but will also feature a rich and diverse mix of both flora and fauna. Among the primary attractions planned for the public space is a dedicated tree museum. This museum will be designed to promote education and awareness regarding biodiversity and ecological conservation.
During her announcement, Ambani drew direct comparisons between the upcoming Coastal Road gardens and some of the most iconic urban parks across the globe. She noted that legendary cities are frequently defined by their landmark green spaces, pointing to Central Park in New York, Hyde Park in London, and the Botanic Gardens in Singapore as prime examples.
The overarching aspiration of the Reliance Foundation and the project's planners is to ensure that the Coastal Road gardens become a similarly defining, world-class public space for the residents of Mumbai.
